John Ashby, currently serving as Co-Club Director and Youth Girls Coach, boasts a storied journey in the water polo world, marked by triumphs both as a player and a distinguished coach. His roots trace back to The Bishop’s School, where in 1997, he played a pivotal role in securing the CIF Championship with a thrilling 10-7 victory over Coronado HS at the UCSD pool, witnessed by an impressive 3,000 attendees.

As a player for San Diego Shores, John achieved notable successes, clinching 2nd place at JOs twice and 3rd place once. His prowess continued into his collegiate years as a Division 1 player at Pepperdine University, showcasing his dedication to the sport at the highest levels.

Transitioning seamlessly into coaching, John Ashby became a driving force behind the success of Bonita High School, leading the team to CIF Championships in 2005 and 2011. His coaching acumen was duly recognized with the CIF Coach of the Year titles in both those triumphant years and the prestigious LA Times Coach of the Year in 2005.

Beyond the high school realm, John, with Alex Rodriguez, founded Foothill Club Water Polo in 2005, leaving an enduring legacy in the water polo community. His commitment to the growth of the sport reached new heights as he hosted the Junior Olympics in 2008, underscoring his dedication to creating impactful experiences for young athletes.

John’s coaching philosophy extends beyond the pool, focusing on the holistic development of athletes both as players and individuals. Witnessing his proteges succeed not only in the game but also as remarkable adults is a source of pride for John Ashby. His journey, marked by championships, coaching honors, and a commitment to athlete development, solidifies his standing as a true force in the water polo landscape.
