John Ashby

(Head Coach – Youth Director) John Ashby is the Bonita High School Boy’s Head Coach and a Spanish teacher. His high school boys team won a CIF Southern Section Championship in 2005, and have been to the CIF Quarterfinals from 2006-2009. In 2005 he was named the Los Angeles Times Boys Water Polo Coach of the Year and CIF Coach of the Year as well. Bonita has never lost a Miramonte Varsity league game under Ashby, winning 5 league titles in the process. In 2009 Bonita was ranked as high as #1 in the Division 5 CIF-SS polls.

Ashby was the head coach of the Bonita Girl’s Water Polo team from 2005-2008. His girls made CIF each year and progressed to the semifinals in 2006. In 2007 he was named San Gabriel Valley Girls Coach of the Year. Ashby won 3 Miramonte league titles as well.

Previously he coached with Alex Rodriguez and Jack Kocur at the Waves Water Polo Club in Thousand Oaks.

John Ashby played on the Pepperdine University water polo team from 1999-2004. He graduated from The Bishop’s School in La Jolla where he was a HS Prep All-American and 1st Team All-CIF selection, winning a CIF Championship in 1998 and runner-up in 1999. He was also named “Scholar-Athlete of the Week” multiple times by the San Diego Union-Tribune. He played for San Diego Shores Water Polo Club and won a Junior Olympic medal in every age group, winning the 18U Gold in San Jose in 1999. Ashby was been coached by the current National team coach, Terry Schroeder (Pepperdine), former Junior National Team coach, Doug Peabody (Bishop’s).

Coach Ashby graduated from Pepperdine University with a B.A. in Spanish and a B.A. in Public Relations and from National University with an M.Ed. with an emphasis in Cross-Cultural Teaching.
