It was a day of terrific games for fans of the game as everyone who paid to watch Wednesday’s CIF Semifinals games sure got their money’s worth. In three tightly contested matchups, Foothill Club saw its players help lead three of our local schools to victory and a shot at immortality with a win in Saturday’s CIF Championship games.
In the earliest game of the day, Damien rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring Palos Verdes 5-1 over the final seven minutes to force another rematch, this time with top-seeded Laguna Beach. The Spartans will be playing in the first session on Saturday with an 11:45 am start time.
Over at Mt. SAC, Nick Estevez shook off foul trouble to lead Nogales back to the Show for the second straight year, and along the way tied the CIF Single Season Scoring record, tallying his 229 goal of the year. A goal in Saturday’s game, to also be played in the first session with a 9:15 am start time, would give Estevez the record outright, but better yet, put the Nobles a little closer to that elusive repeat.
In the nightcap at Mt. SAC, it took overtime to decide the battle between Bonita and La Serna, both loaded with club players, after Nick Wallman found the net with 4 seconds to play in regulation to force the extra time. The Bearcats eventually held on for a 10-9 victory and a shot at the school’s sixth title*, and the second for Head Coach John Ashby. Bonita will have the 5:30 pm game on Saturday in the last session of the day just before the epic Division 1 rematch between Mater Dei and El Toro.
News coverage of all of these games can be found here.
All games on Saturday will be played at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center next to Irvine HS. General admission is $8, $5 for students and children under 13. Get down the pool and support Foothill Club!
*For those of you who don’t know, Bonita’s first CIF Championship came in 2001 under our fantastc Foothill Club Head Coach Alex Rodriguez.
