With wins in the CIF quarterfinals, four local teams are set to challenge for Championship game appearances, giving Wednesday’s games a distinctive Foothill Flare.
In Division 3, Damien HS breezed through their Saturday game against host Palos Verdes Peninsula to set up a familiar road going forward. In the semifinals, the Spartans are set to face Palos Verdes HS, a team they defeated in the same game last year. A repeat performance in this year’s game, to be played at 2 pm at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center in Irvine, would likely set Damien up to play another repeat game against Laguna Beach in the Finals.
In another rematch, the Division 5 Semifinal is set to see Bonita and La Serna, both featuring club athletes (including Mitchell Embry pictured in the black cap), renew their recent rivalry. Bonita will looking for payback after last year’s semifinal loss to the Lancer’s, which lead to La Serna’s first CIF Championship. The top-seeded Bearcats cruised into the game with an 11-5 victory over Chadwick, while La Serna needed overtime to triumph over Glendale, a dangerous opponent that had defeated Bonita this year. Wednesday’s game will be played at Mt. San Antonio College at 7:30 pm and is sure to have emotions running high.
In Wednesday’s 3 pm game at Mt. SAC, Nogales and Nick Estevez (pictured in the white cap) find themselves back in the Division 7 Semifinals with a 16-10 win over Cabrillo HS. The Nobles opponent will be Santa Ynez, the team they defeated to claim last year’s Championship.
Good luck to all teams this Wednesday! Let’s all make sure the Foothill family gets out to support the boys!
